Project Description:

I built a modern take on a vintage 60s speaker that could handle bluetooth and turntables.

Design Goals:

Build a beautiful standalone or pairable speaker set for home hifi uses under $500 in parts

Driver Selection:

2 x GRS 8PF-8 8″ part # 292-408

2 x Dayton Audio DC25T-8 1″ Titanium Dome Tweeter part # 275-045

Enclosure Design:

Quarter inch mdf with cabinet grade walnut veneer. Higher density MDF half inch for the front, rear and bottom panels. Top and side reinforced as needed.

Crossover Design:

Digital crossover using Dayton Audio KABD-4100 part # 325-434 and Dayton Audio KPX #325-139 with sigma studio

Tips & Tricks:

DSP and sigma studio are incredibly powerful and they can save $ overall especially during R&D time sound shaping your crossovers and combining stereo inputs to mono.

Conclusion:

Sounds great as a mono cabinet. I’ve made variations of this design to work as a pair. Each with one tweeter and one 10inch woofer in stereo with a matching cabinet and a share amplifier board.

I make and sell portable suitcase speakers for years. This was a fun experiment into home audio and true stereo separation when used as a pair. Please consider sound absorbing feet for setting a turntable on top of a speaker, Better yet consider a wall shelve to further element vibrations.
