Ammo Can MCRD PI

Designer:
Warren P.
Project Category:
Portable Speakers
Project Level:
Beginner
Project Time:
1-8 Hours
Project Cost:
$100 – $500
Project Description:
Basic ammo can using the 2×30 watt kit.
Design Goals:
Making a going away gift for a Marine who is going to another base. We wanted something other than a plaque and wanted the gift to be something he would enjoy. I added corner guards for a more rugged look and laser etched ” Parris Island” and “We Make Marines” on the lid.
Driver Selection:
Part #: 300-7301 ammo box kit Dayton Radio 3″ full range drivers
Enclosure Design:
It’s a M242 ammo can for 5.56 rounds
Enclosure Assembly:
I used a tungsten carbide 3″ hole saw for the speaker holes and an angle grinder to cut the hole for the control panel. Also used a bigger Bluetooth antenna routed through a hole to the outside to extend coverage. I used sound dampening adhesive rubber to minimize the metal reverberation. 80mm fan guards worked great as speaker grills with a bit of bending at the connection holes
Crossover Design:
None
Conclusion:
Sounds better than expected for an untuned cabinet. I’m certain the Marine will be happy with the gift. It was a fun, easy project.
