Designer:

Project Category:

Bookshelf Speakers

Project Level:

Intermediate

Project Time:

20+ Hours

Project Cost:

$500-$1,000

Project Description:

Speakers are too large to be a bookshelf. They are stand mount speakers and are one of the more complex designs I have attempetd

Design Goals:

To create a high end great sounding speaker with adequate bass and decent mid and high end.

Driver Selection:

10″ Woofer Faital Pro 10FE330 294-1340
4″ Mid B&C 4NDF34-8 294-5938
1 1/8″ Morel ET 448 soft dome tweeter 277-074

Enclosure Design:

Enclosure design: Old school design of a very popular speaker Retro design.

Crossover Design:

Crossover is a 2nd order three way design with cross over points at 375Hz and 3 kHz.

Tips & Tricks:

I likely should not have mounted the L pads on the back due to connectors needed for a removable back. The front is reinforced with an additional 1/2 inch Baltic birch plywood behind the woofer. and reinforced. I built speaker stands from scrap 2X2 s I had and elevate the speakers at a 5 degrees so tweeter is near ear level when seated.

Conclusion:

With a rated range both higher and lower than the speaker this is based on and a greater Spl of 92 vs 90. This rather complex design weighed in at 48bs each. The bass is deep, rich and tight. The mids and highs are clear and exact.

About the Designer:

I’ve liked wood working and electronics. Also most types of music. Speaker building this is my third set build using Parts Express.

classic look. Thought it was a refurbished cabinet at first glance. Good routing for each driver. Should be plenty efficient and loud enough. How does 40hz hold up against the efficiency of the rest?

Hi David without proper equipment to measure the Bass which was shockingly deep rich and tight in this acoustic design which utilizes speakers with better specs than the great speakers which this retro design was adopted. Check out KLH 5. Reviews. You can listen to vinyl on these , but poor recordings will not sound good. I don’t know how well various amps play well, but with 30 watts RMS these will come alive nicely. Unless you love Extreme bass distortion no sub woofer needed.. I hope this helps. Sound deading material is edge cut fiberglass. By the way FUNF is German for 5
