Open Baffle, No Compromises

Designer: RobAus

Project Time: 8-20 hours
Project Complexity: Hobbyist
Project Cost: $100-$500

Concept
I had a pair of open baffles that I made which were a bit of a prototype/compromise. These were designed from scratch with specific drivers in mind. I still can’t believe the sound, or that they made it into the Lounge room ๐Ÿ™‚

Enclosure Design
yeah so its a board…. but seriously, i used the freeware edge program and martin j kings excel calculators to match my drivers specs and its worked out very well.

Amplifier/Crossover Configuration
5khz 2nd order high pass on ribbon. 250hz-5khz 1st order on the Celestian 5″s 250hz 1st order on the beta15a

Enclosure Assembly
so, again, its a board. cut the holes, make em straight, add some brackets for feet.

Conclusion
tight controlled bass, realism and the speed and clarity with witch its delivered is a listening experience that will change your life! can you tell I like them? I work in a lot of studios, have made some great speakers, listen to sets at shows at nauseum but these, these are the ducks nuts!

I have a quad of Dayton IB15’s waiting for a project. Is there a part number for the mids and ribbon or other recommendations for likely candidates?

    Always

I talked to some of the guys at Parts Express, and these were their best guesses for the parts used:
    1. Eminence beta-15A woofer, part 290-410 $80
    2. Celestian 5″ mid, part 294-2050, $35
    3. Dayton Audio PT2C-8 Planar Tweeter, part 275-085, $55

the woofer is 98db, the mid is 91 db, and the tweeter is 94db, so depending on the listener, maybe an L pad could be used to bring the tweeter down a bit. sounds like a premade crossover, like part 260-150 would work, but one would probably need to stick to one mid in that case, instead of the two in this design. maybe a crossever from Bob Craft on ebay would be better.
